Is het toeval of een samenloop van omstandigheden, het feit blijft dat “The Foundation 11 lijnen” de derde “Foundation is” waar we een commentaar aan besteden de derde die gelegen is in West-Vlaanderen, of een directe link heeft met die provincie.

 

Als men er ” Passions Secrètes” nog bij neemt, met werken van Kortrijkse verzamelaars, onlangs te zien in Rijsel, dan kan het niet anders of het ligt aan de aard van die West-Vlamingen, die harde werkers zijn, niet bang zijn van verandering, het risico niet schuwen en graag in hedendaagse kunst investeren.

Mrs. Griet Van Middelem-Dupont is de bedenker en regisseur van dit museum, of deze stichting, die goed verborgen ligt in een boerderij in de polders van regio Oostende. U kunt maar beter een degelijke GPS gebruiken om dit museum te vinden dat als het ware “in the middle of nowhere” ligt.

Deze uit het einde van de 17e eeuw daterende boerderij was eigendom van de familie Van Middelem. Voor de verbouwing tot huis en museum, werd beroep gedaan op de Portugees Alvaro Siza, één van de grote namen in de hedendaagse architectuur. Mw. Van Middelem-Dupont is pedopsychiater en gepassioneerd door hedendaagse kunst. Haar stichting organiseert twee tentoonstellingen per jaar. De huidige heeft als titel : “ Liberated Subjects : Pioneers” en wordt in april 2015 gevolgd door een tweede luik dat als titel “Liberated Subjects: Present Tense“ zal krijgen. Het centraal thema, voor beide tentoonstellingen, is de verkenning van de thema’s van identiteit en vrijheid van schepping, en het is Ernest Mancoba, een zwarte Zuid-Afrikaan, die er de centrale kunstenaar van is. De begeleidende tekst (alleen in het Engels) zegt “de kern van het project is één van de meest bepalende krachten van de eenentwintigste eeuw: de uitoefening van en uitdrukking van individualiteit in een steeds meer homogene en onderling verbonden wereld“.

Dit is heel mooi gezegd, maar persoonlijk verkies ik dit soort intellectualistisch commentaar te vermijden om een kunstwerk te beschrijven; het werk moet uit zichzelf spreken en niet via academische beschrijvingen. En de tentoongestelde werken in de Oostendse polders spreken voor zichzelf en al zijn ze misschien niet allemaal een verplaatsing waard,ze zijn ze zeker een omweg waard. Zeker dat van Ernest Mancoba bij wie je zijn Afrikaanse roots voelt in zijn non-figuratieve schilderijen. Dat hij lid was van de Cobra-beweging is een pluspunt op zijn CV, maar brengt niets bij tot de kwaliteit van deze nog miskende kunstenaar, die op zichzelf een omweg waard is. Hij wordt in deze tentoonstelling begeleid door drie kunstenaressen, met een al even exotische achtergrond als Mancoba. Bij deze dames onthoud ik vooral Monir Farmanfarmaian, een Iraanse die in de jaren ’40 en ’50 in New York woont, waar ze samenwerkt met Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Joan Mitchell et Andy Warhol. In 1957 keert ze terug naar Iran en begint ze te experimenteren met omgekeerde glastechniek, spiegelmozaïeken en islamitische geometrie die ze verweeft met westerse modernistische elementen.

De twee andere kunstenaressen: Ethe Adnan, een Libanese wonend in de Verenigde Staten, en Carmen Herrera, een Cubaanse die een lange tijd pendelt tussen Cuba en Parijs alvorens zich definitief in de Verenigde Staten te vestigen, hebben mij minder kunnen bekoren met hun geometrische schilderijen.

The Foundation De 11 Lijnen is proud to present the first in a series of two exhibitions that explore the themes of creative freedom and identity. At the heart of the project lies one of the most defining forces of the twenty-first century: the pursuit and expression of individuality in an increasingly homogenous and interconnected world.

The work of South African-born artist Ernest Mancoba (1904-2002) is central to both exhibitions. Mancoba, who left Africa to study art in Paris in 1938, infused modern European art with a unique African spirit. One of the founding members of the CoBrA group, his unique style is characterised by subtle colours, dynamic compositions and diffuse, enigmatic forms. Liberated Subjects: Pioneers presents a selection of Mancoba’s paintings and drawings from the 1970s, and explores the artist’s deep understanding of African culture. In the words of Rasheed Araeen: ‘With Mancoba, the place of Africa in modernity is no longer that of an appropriated object but that of a liberated subject … Africa’s place is no longer peripheral to the mainstream history of modernism but central within it.’ 1 Yet the horizons of the project are much wider. Pioneers looks beyond Africa to consider the work of three living women artists from Mancoba’s generation who, like him, were born in lands far removed from the main thrust of modernism. Relocating to Europe and America in order to engage with their contemporaries, they were amongst the first to interpret the aesthetics of their respective countries through the medium of Western abstraction.

Etel Adnan (b. 1925, Beirut) studied philosophy in Paris and New York in the 1950s. Both a writer and an artist, Adnan has often addressed the political and personal dimensions of violence, specifically the Lebanese civil war, in her poetry and prose. While her vivid, small-scale, abstract landscapes make less explicit references to political and social issues, they nevertheless reflect Adnan’s experience of exile from familiar places, her intense inner life and profound admiration for nature. Mount Tamalpais, north of San Francisco (where the artist lives), is a frequent source of inspiration. Adnan also makes accordion-folded books, or leporellos, in which she combines both words and images.

Monir Farmanfarmaian (b. 1924, Iran) trained as an artist in New York in the 1940s and 1950s and developed a distinctive visual approach that combines traditional Iranian motifs and techniques – reverse glass painting, mirror mosaics and the principles of Islamic geometry – with elements of Western modernism. Her meticulously crafted, wall-mounted panels and freestanding sculptures are dazzling architectural compositions that play on surface texture, refracted light and colour. Farmanfarmaian is also known for her intricate, multi-layered drawings that, like her sculptural works, present a complex synthesis of ancient geometric forms and contemporary aesthetics.

Painter Carmen Herrera (b. 1915, Cuba) divided her time between France and Cuba throughout the 1930s and 1940s. Originally trained as an architect, she studied art in New York (1943–45), before exhibiting four times at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles, Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris (1949–53). Grounded in the languages of both Latin American and Western abstraction, Herrera has consistently employed hard-edged, geometric forms and radiant combinations of two, occasionally three colours, to graphically delineate space and form. Herrera’s oeuvre, which spans the last six decades, has recently achieved worldwide recognition.

Hans Ulrich Obrist’s in-depth interviews with the four artists will be published in the accompanying exhibition catalogue.

The second exhibition, Liberated Subjects: Present Tense, opens in April 2015. In this presentation, Ernest Mancoba’s oeuvre provides the historical counterpoint to a selection of works by a younger generation of African artists. Recognising the reality of contemporary African art as an ‘atomised, dynamic and geographically imprecise set of practices’,2 Present Tense looks at the urgent issues of globalisation and identity, and the legacies of colonialism, nationalism and modernity.

 

Est-ce le hasard ou un concours de circonstances, toujours est-il que « The Foundation De 11 lijnen » est la troisième « fondation » à laquelle nous consacrons un commentaire et c’est la troisième qui se trouve en Flandre Occidentale ou qui a un lien direct avec cette province. Si on y ajoute l’exposition « Passions Secrètes » qui vient de se dérouler au Tripostal à Lille et qui nous présentait des œuvres en provenance de collections privées flamandes – de la grande région de Courtrai pour être plus précis – cela doit être dû au caractère de ces Ouest- Flamands, qui travaillent dur, qui n’ont peur ni du risque, ni du changement et qui aiment et investissent dans l’art contemporain

Madame Griet Van Middelem-Dupont est la créatrice et la directrice de ce musée ou cette fondation, qui se trouve caché dans une ferme au fond des polders de la région ostendaise. Mieux vaut d’ailleurs être équipé d’un bon GPS pour retrouver ce musée, un peu “in the middle of nowhere”.

La ferme date de la fin du 17e siècle et appartenait à la famille Van Middelem. Pour la reconversion en musée, avec habitation, on a fait appel au Portugais Alvaro Siza, une des grandes figures de l’architecture contemporaine.

Madame Van Middelem-Dupont est une pédopsychiatre, passionnée par l’art contemporain. Elle organise dans sa fondation, deux expositions par an. Pour cette exposition, comme pour la deuxième, le thème central est l’exploration des thèmes de l’identité et de la liberté de création, et c’est Ernest Mancoba, un Sud-Africain noir, qui en est l’artiste central. Le petit explicatif (uniquement en anglais) précise: « Au cœur du projet se trouve une des forces déterminantes du 21e siècle : la poursuite et l’expression de l’individualité dans un monde de plus en plus homogène et interconnecté. »

Cela est très bien dit, mais personnellement je préfère éviter ce genre de commentaire intellectualiste pour décrire une œuvre d’art. Il faut que l’œuvre parle par elle-même et non pas au travers de considérations académiques. Et les œuvres exposées dans les polders ostendais, parlent par elles-mêmes, et si elles ne méritent peut-être pas toutes le déplacement, elles valent certainement le détour. Surtout celles d’ Ernest Mancoba, chez qui on sent ses racines africaines dans ses tableaux non figuratifs. Il est accompagné dans cette exposition par trois artistes féminines, d’origines tout aussi exotiques que Mancoba. Parmi ces femmes je retiens surtout Monir Farmanfarmaian, une Iranienne qui a vit à New York durant les années ’40 et ’50, où elle travaille avec Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Barnett Newman, Joan Mitchell et Andy Warhol. Retournée en Iran en 1957, elle expérimente et mélange la technique de verre inversé, des mosaïques de miroir et les principes de géométrie islamique, avec des éléments modernistes occidentaux.

Les deux autres artistes : Ethe Adnan, une Libanaise résidant aux Etats-Unis, et Carmen Herrera, une Cubaine qui a voyagé longtemps entre Cuba et Paris pour se fixer définitivement aux USA, m’ont moins impressionné avec leurs peintures géométriques.
